It’s not the disability that defines you; its how you deal with the challenges the disability presents you with.

Ready, Set, Take Charge!

It’s easy to start taking charge of your health. And, it’s still okay to ask your parents about it. The important thing is to find out how much you do know and learn the answers to what you don’t. So, let’s start:

You can read through these and answer the questions for yourself, if you like you can click here to download a PDF to print out and write your answers on..

FIRST: Do as much as you can on your own.

  1. What activities do you need to do to keep yourself healthy?
  2. Can you do these activities by yourself? Or do you need someone to help you?
  3. Do you know how to direct others to help you?

SECOND: Take part in the decisions about your health.

  1. Do you talk to your doctor during your visits?
  2. Do you understand your needs? What are they?
  3. Do you ask questions and agree to treatments?
  4. Where do you go for more information besides your doctor?
  5. Write down any extra thoughts or questions you may have.

THIRD: Learn as much as you can about your health needs.

  1. Do you know what your diagnosis is called?
  2. What medications do you take?
  3. When do you take them?
  4. Do you know how to re-order your medications?
  5. What is your doctor’s name and phone number?
  6. Who should be called in case of an emergency?

Take your time, this is not a test. Relax and go at your own pace. Just remember, the more you think about your health, the better prepared you’ll be when you’re finally on your own!

What Does It All Mean?

It has to do with Your Future.

It’s important to understand if your medical condition or disability might limit the kind of job you’d like to have when you grow up. Or the kind of college or university you can go to, or even the place you may want to live. Understanding your situation can help you pick out the best classes in high school, the best training or education beyond high school, and the best resources for reaching your goals.

All in all, when you stay healthy and understand your health needs, there’s no limit to what you can be…Prime Minister, business owner, the next reality show star.
